Grundisburgh

Grundisburgh is a surprisingly vital village set about 6 miles north east from Ipswich. The village can trace its origins to medieval times and beyond and may be linked to a Roman settlement to be found just to the east of the present day village. At the centre of the village is The Dog, a great dog friendly pub, and a great place from which to start and end a walk.

On the day of our visit, we plotted a circular walk using public rights of way that start across the village green at the parish church of St Marys. To the left-hand side of the church is a lane and following this to its end one finds the start of the footpath signed along the wall of the churchyard.

At the entrance of the path, and along the way are little yellow signs, about the size of a biscuit, advising that dogs should be kept on a lead. Many of the paths are in fact bridleways and as such, the law requires dogs be under "close control". However, there were no farm animals in the area that we could spot and most of the surrounding fields are used to grow arable crops such as maize. In early August, when we visited, the sweet corn husks were beginning to ripen and the fields provided a natural maze. Thankfully, the paths were pretty well signed, as every so often, the right of way cuts through the fields and you have to be pretty on the ball to distinguish these blink and you’ll miss ‘em pathways through the crops.

Heading back down to the village, you come back through a couple of natural river fords that retain their charming old cart wash sides and depth measures. Kopek and Malli took full opportunity to play in the water, which is their greatest love in life and after this, a tiny amount of road walking brings you past the only poo bin we could see and back to the pub.

This was a great little walk for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. For the more adventurous, who may wish to go a bit farther, the footpaths to the west of the village cut across country for about a mile and lead across to Witnesham and to another great dog friendly Suffolk pub, The Barley Mow
