With a name like The Dog, a pub really has to be dog friendly. However, having heard of a few landlords around Suffolk who are not that smart, and have in fact banned dogs from dog-named pubs, we weren’t counting our chickens and phoned ahead to make sure ours would be welcome. So when the bright voice answered the phone, we were very pleased to find out that yes indeed The Dog at Grundisburgh welcomes dogs.
Arriving at this charming free house just 6 miles outside of Ipswich the evidence was there for all to see with a kindly water bowl waiting at the entrance. Dogs are allowed in the main bar and the pub offers further outside seating to the front and in a cosy family garden to the rear. Behind the rear garden is a large car park, which is accessed by a track to left hand side of the pub.
The Dog has an excellent reputation for its food and that is one reason we thought it wise to ring ahead. Having travelled about a bit we have noticed that there seems to be a bit of rift in the perception of whether it is possible to be a good food pub and offer a welcome to our furry friends. The good food pubs we have found see no trouble at all in accommodating dogs and diners often just maintaining a dog-free area in one side of the pub for those without their pets in tow. Those with only pretensions of high quality though cannot seem to get it into their heads that the mark of truly good service is the customer is king, not the chef, and that especially includes those customers who do something a bit different from the norm, like dining with their hounds.
No such trouble at The Dog, who obviously have a good sense of humour as seen in their choice of organic "Salty Dog" crisps for the bar food. The menu promotes "Best of British", and the food on offer is a tantalising mix of local produce, and continental twists. Mains average at around £10 and in these challenging times The Dog helpfully offers an early diner discount in the week.
One of the other great things about this pub is its setting on the village green. All of village life seems to pass before the pub and the Olde Forge Stores next door. On the day we visited, there was a wedding, and the front of the pub was busy with guests all taking a reviving draft before heading in to the church for the service. As the bells rang out to announce the start of the nuptials we had to laugh as Kopek and Malli took up the chorus, howling at the top of their lungs, to help celebrate the day. The Grundisburgh Dog is great pub in a great thriving village and well worth a visit.
